President's MessageDavid Bressie
It is with great pleasure that I announce the Honorary Membership of Dennis Huajardo.  Dennis has been a member since 1979 and served on the Board of PTC in 2001 and 2002.  Dennis was also PTC Chair of Junior Activities in 1981 and served on many committees over the years.  Dennis was also the Tournament Referee for the California State Senior Tournament from 2005-2012 and was a USTA Board of Director from 1979-1981.

Congratulations Dennis, we are lucky to have members at PTC as dedicated as you are!

On July 14th we will hold a member-guest tennis event.  We are taking a break from the Woods n' Whites this year and trying to rotate in new events that the members will enjoy.  The details will be forthcoming in an upcoming email blast and sign-up.  Hopefully this fun morning-only format will be a great way for members to play with their friends, family members, or future members that you may be sponsoring.

As always, if you have any ideas or comments, please let me know.  See you on the courts.

Sad news to pass on about former PTC member Peter Grossman, who passed away recently.  He was a member of the club for 37 years, first joining in 1991.  Peter played in many outside tournaments as well as those at PTC.  He was a very successful physician and loved both nature and travel.  Dan Dewitt says that he was an avid "birder."  He recalled that while playing with him one time, Peter's focus had gone skyward in the middle of the match.  Turns out that he had spotted a type of Oriole!  He will be missed.

Please check out the lost and found closet located next to the girls locker room as it is overflowing.  Any items left after June 30th will be donated to charity.

The pool is heated and ready for summer.  Lifeguards will be on duty weekends from 1:30-5:30 pm and at all Twilight Tennis events.  Children under 14 must be actively supervised by a parent even when lifeguards are present.  Please do not allow children access to club keys at any time.  Keys are for adult Senior Members only.

Thank you for helping save the earth by bringing your refillable water bottles to the club.

Reminder: The tennis courts will be resurfaced July 29th through August 23rd.  During this time, three doubles courts will be available for member use.

Please contact me or Steve at 650-347-1439 or peninsulatennisclub@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Club News:
The first PTC Poker Tournament of the year will be held on Tuesday, June 11th in the clubhouse starting at 3:00 pm.  It is a two hour tournament with a one-time $30 buy-in.  Please sign up on the club bulletin board.  Contact Jeff Tateosian at jefftat@pacbell.net with any questions about the tournament.

The Mad Hatter Ladies Doubles morning was a great success.  Thanks so much to everyone for playing and showing great spirit with fabulous hats!  Congratulations to the winners: Adrienne Schubiner and Elizabeth Pratt, Sheila Druskin and Lona Means, Kelly Mulready and Angie Kwan.  A special thanks to Shari Meyers, Steve Brooks and Marci Martinucci for helping out with the tournament desk, getting scores recorded and keeping everyone moving to their assigned courts.  I couldn't have done it without you.

A belated thanks for their invaluable help and expertise goes out to Nancy Batchelor and Marci Martinucci for helping me with the Spring Fling, and whom I forgot to thank in last month's Drop Shot.

Be sure to stop by this weekend to see the always popular van Dillen Men's Doubles Club Championships.  Play will begin Friday afternoon and go through Saturday, with the Finals being played on Sunday.  You'll see some of the best tennis played all year.

We also hope that you join us for the first Twilight Tennis on June 20th, the TGIF on July 5.  More details to follow.

As mentioned by David above, be sure to figure out your partner for the new PTC Invitational Tennis Tournament which will be played on Sunday, July 14th.  The format is a member/guest invitational.  Depending on interest and sign-ups, we are planning to have two brackets - a 7.5 and below, and 8.0 and up for both men's and women's divisions.  The format will include a total of eight games - no add scoring, with three matches and the finals match guaranteed.  Lunch will also be served at the tournament.  Look for a sign-up sheet at the club after the van Dillen Championship Tournament.

Did you know that PTC runs on a budget?  Of course we do.  As a member-owned club, it’s important that we spend within our means.  A detailed budget helps us to monitor that we are doing just that.  I’m pleased to be able to convey that our Operating P&L came in favorable to Budget for the 1st Quarter of 2019.  The three main categories of our Operating Net Income are income, COGS, and expenses.  In a nutshell, income (dues, the Junior program, guest fees, and merchandise) is offset by COGS (the cost of merchandise and running the snack bar) and expenses (the ongoing operating costs of running the club).  Our 1st Quarter came in fairly close to budget across all three of these, which is indicative of a rigorous and effective budgeting process.  For Q1, PTC had Net Operating Income of $18.8k, which was $4.4k above budget.  A great start for the year!  I plan to read-out on the budget vs. actual performance on a quarterly basis.  Feel free to find me at PTC if you would like to discuss any of this in more detail.

During the 2nd and 3rd Quarters of this year, we are planning to initiate a long-term Capital Plan.  I will be working on this in conjunction with the Board President and House & Grounds.  We hope to create a document that will estimate the cost of future projects and key equipment replacements, as well as lay out the approximate timing of these expenditures.  The main goals of this exercise will be to 1) provide a basis for evaluating the adequacy of our reserves; 2) enable a dialog among members on the relative priority of alternative projects, enhancements, and/or replacements; and 3) provide for the continuity of this planning for the use of future Boards.  We look forward to sharing this with you later in the year.
