President's MessagePeter Stevenson
What a great weekend of tennis.  The annual Men’s and Women’s Calcutta were a huge success and big thanks go out to Bryan Welsh, Angie Kwan and their volunteers for all of their time and effort.   Congratulations to all participants and to the teams that finished in the money!

Now that summer is wrapping up, I want to take a moment to thank all of the USTA teams that came up with the themes and organized the slate of Twilight Tennis events these past few months.   Beginning with the Golden State Warriors tribute in June, followed by the Mamma Mia theme in July, and ending up with “Hot August Nights” – the energy around these events – both on and off the courts – is a what makes our PTC such a special place.  I hope everyone is already looking forward to next summer’s line-up.

Finally, the Board is forming a committee to look at all aspects of the café – including menu – in order to ensure that we meet the needs of the membership going forward.  Those who are interested in joining the committee (or simply providing input) should reach out to Lona.
See everyone out on the courts.

The next USTA Mixed 40+ and Men and Women's Combo season is rapidly approaching.  Please contact the captain or me if you would like to play on a team this season.  Regular season play is from September 17th through December 16th.  Come out and play, compete and have fun with your fellow PTC members.

Monthly Rule Reminders:
  • PTC does not condone the use of profane language, yelling, racket throwing, slamming of tennis balls, and the like, at any time or anywhere on the premises.
  • PTC is a family-oriented club of Members who love and appreciate the game of tennis.  As noted above, courtesy, good sportsmanship and respect for fellow Members and guests is and should be the norm.
  • When walking to a court to play, you must use the entry doors closest to that court.  DO NOT at any time walk across courts that are occupied.
  • There shall be no cell phone usage on courts 1, 2, and 3 and the corresponding patio area.  Any cell phone usage that may occur elsewhere at the club shall be done in a respectful manner with due consideration of both players and spectators.

Fall is in the air.  Hope you are capitalizing on the last few weeks of the long days.

The 2018 Calcutta has just wrapped up, and we all had a great weekend.  Dinner on Friday, September 7th, was a packed house for La Tapatia Mexican food and the Team Draw event.  Marty Funk was the Emcee this year (his first time at this) and did a fine job.  This year's theme was SURVIVOR.  A big thank you goes out to Angela Kwan and her committee for a nice evening.  The Men’s and Women’s teams were drawn randomly, and we had a total of 66 participants.  Congratulations to Christina Ching’s “Blue Bikal Breakers” team (Angie Kwan, Teri Gregory, Lexi Slavet, Delyn Simons and Carey Welsh) for winning the Women’s Calcutta. On the Men’s side, Dan Mulready’s “Green Goshen Gamers,” (Mike Shaffer, Jeff Tsu, Bob Wren, Dan McGee, and Rich Schoustra) took the top honors.  Many thanks to the Tennis Committee for helping out: Steve Brooks, Amy Grenier, Sheila Druskin, Gene Trainor, and Duncan Grenier, plus Lona, Loel and Tony as well.  Good team tennis and good times – can’t wait for next year.

I would like to announce the formation of the first annual Betty Cookson PTC Women’s Doubles Championship.  This will be the Club Championship for Women’s Doubles.  Match play is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th, with Finals on the morning of Sunday, October 14th.  This tournament has the potential to be a great new tradition for the club, similar to the men’s van Dillen Tournament.  We are honored to name it after Betty Cookson for her accomplishments and contributions to tennis, both at PTC and at the national level.  Betty, at 95 years young, remains an active PTC member and is a nationally recognized, highly decorated player.  Among her many accomplishments; Betty is a National Gold Slam Champion (1992), a member of the Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame, has been recognized with the PTC Award twice (1992, 2003), and is the recipient of the USTA National Service Award.  The tournament planning committee is hard at work on the details for this new event – divisions, a perpetual trophy, winner’s trophies, logo, swag, and of course a party – so stay tuned for more info.  Gather your doubles partner and look for a sign-up sheet soon. Ladies, we will be needing some help, so if you’d like to be part of the inaugural Cookson committee, please contact Bryan Welsh at brwelsh6679@gmail.com or Sheila Higgins Druskin at shiggins1028@yanoo.com.

USTA NEWS: PTC has the following USTA teams registered for the next season which starts on September 17th:  Combo Doubles: Women’s 6.5, 7.5 & 8.5.  Men’s 7.5 & 9.5.  Mixed 40+: 7.0, 8.0 & 9.0.  Consider getting involved and join once of these fine teams.

"Hot August Nights" was our last Twilight Tennis of the summer.  Linda Pene Nagare is quite the party organizer who was able to bring her 4.0 team of players to the courts and rally some great fun.  Special thanks to her co-chairpersons: Kim Cresci and Ken March.  The party featured an over the top job by Dennis Mayer on the "Golden Cadillac" picture over the bar.  It wouldn't be  a Twilight Tennis without our own DJ, Jeff Tateosian.  Thank you to the pie crew: Debbie Bakhtiari, Patty Rossi, Sheila Druskin, Anne Giannini, Laura Hesslegren, Natalie Vasiliev, Olive Ebert, Kris Willig, Cris Manger, Debbie Oldham, Marisa Wachhorst, Jenny Smith, Meaghan Schaefer, Steve Benvenuto and Gordon Nagare.  The BBQ was delicious as always, and we would like to thank chefs Jim Fregosi, Jeff Tsu, Gene Trainer and David Armstrong.  If you missed it, we had some spectacular wheels on sight at PTC.  Also, thank you to Karl Bakhtiari, Rob Adams, Ken March, Tom Blumberg and Kim Cresci for sharing your classic pristine cars.  Thank you all for making our last Twilight of the summer so incredibly special.  And I would like to thank all the USTA teams who participated in Twilight Tennis.  It truly was a great summer of fun.

Late Correction: I would like to send out a belated thank you to Scott With for his help tending bar during our Spring Fling Mixer back in April.  Thanks for your help, and your smile is priceless.

Finally, save the date for our annual PTC Holiday Party on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018.  Our club is celebrating 85 years.  Plan on joining us for this special occasion.
