President’s Message:  Kris Willig
Spring is finally here, and with it a new buzz of activity at PTC.  We start this new season full of hope for a future filled with good health, fun, friendship, and tennis!

I’d like to say a hearty thanks to the outgoing PTC Board members who have each spent so many hours working on behalf of our club – Reynold Harbin, Gene Trainor, and Erica ReillyKate Belding (Membership), Denee Berliner (Social), and Jack Herndon (Finance) will continue to serve on the Board, and we all welcome new members Beth Francesconi (Secretary), Marty Funk (House & Grounds), and Doug Heffernan (Tennis) to the Board.  I am very grateful for the service of all outgoing and incoming Board members.

The Tennis and Social Committees are working hard to bring you a calendar of events with something for just about everyone.  From this weekend’s Mixed Doubles Tournament and Presidents Ball to Fall’s Men’s Singles and Betty Cookson Women’s tournaments, the Holiday Party, and everything in between, we all have a lot to look forward to.  Please see the reports below from these committees for the latest events-related updates.

The overwhelmingly positive response by our membership to the barbecue area renovation proposal was great news, more on that project from Marty Funk, below.  The new barbecue area will provide more opportunities for members to gather and enjoy PTC!

Editor's Note:  Jeff Tateosian
PTC has long been known as the "Jewel of the Peninsula."  The reputation comes not just from the beautiful facility, but from the tennis community that make up the club. When tragedy strikes, there is no better place to be surrounded by this loving tennis family.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Tennis News:  Doug Heffernan
I want to start by thanking everyone for all the warm welcomes.  We have such a great group of people and friends that come together daily, weekly, and most definitely for big events.  We started this year with the Spring Fling Mixed Doubles, and it came off without a hitch - thank you to Sheila Druskin and Peter Stevenson.  They both put out a tremendous effort to rally enough people to fill two full tennis flights.  It was great to see so many people at the club enjoying the camaraderie, the sun, and the competition.

We had two competitive flightsFlight A had a dominant group coming out of the bracket play only to be upset in the finals.  The winning team (Purple team), held on to win the overall flight A bracket.   Representing the Purple team was Justin Foster, Evan Krasts, Jimmy Sobel, Shannon Foster, Marilee Brooks and Kate Belding

Flight B had three teams that came down to the final round to decide the top two.  It ended up very close.  In the final, the Red team prevailed and took home the towels and caps.  The Red team featured Bill St. Lawrence, Chris Geheran, Joe Bojues, Sheila Higgins Druskin, Jackie Sage and Sami Ahn (playing from the club waiting list).

Congratulations to all participants who made it a great day.

Upcoming Events:
Our next big event - Women’s Double, will be held Friday, May 6th.  It’s tradition to get a group of fun women together before Mother’s Day weekend.  This is a doubles event where you get to pick your own partner.  We will have three flights this year to help break things up and keep it very competitive.  Start figuring out your partner - the sign-ups will be up soon.

In June we will be hosting the van Dillen Men's Doubles Championships, and will be held Saturday, June 4th.  Watch for more information about the tournament next month.

We are always looking for volunteers, so if there is an event you want to support, please let me know.  Thank you all and see you at the club.

House & Grounds Report:  Marty Funk
We have some great projects on the docket this year for House and Grounds.  First up will be to remodel the BBQ area.  We'll be removing the brick and tile BBQ area as well as removing the portable gas grill and breplacing that area with a custom built "backyard BBQ" structure.  Two large gas grills, two stove burners, and two outdoor grade refrigerators along with some storage and prep area, and a sink to rinse dishes.  The goal being to create a space with the highest ease of use and utility.

Other projects currently being considered or pursued include replacing the drinking fountain at court 7 with a filtered and cooled bottle filler, removing the sink area in the women's locker room and adding tall lockers, and... we're going to need to look at addressing the large cracks that go from courts 3 to 2, heading toward 1.  This last item will be costly and if we choose to address it now, will be several years ahead of our regular scheduled court resurfacing.  We're actively looking at patching alternatives that could get us through to our next budgeted resurface and at the same time, will investigate new surfacing technology that may help limit these issues that seem to come up sooner than we hope/expect.

Membership News:  Kate Belding
The membership committee has had a busy start to 2022.  Please join me in welcoming our newest members to PTC!

The Turner family, who live in Hillsborough, joined the club in January 2022.  Andy and his wife, Kim Gelman, have two children, Logan (21) and Ellery (19).  Andy is a 3.0 player and plays once a week.  Both Andy and Kim are looking forward to the opportunity to play more tennis now that they are members at PTC.

The Felton family joined the club in February 2022 and live close to the club.  They have a handful of friends who are already members which has provided a great, welcoming experience thus far for the family.  Paul grew up as more of a water sports enthusiast, focused on water polo, swimming, and surfing, yet got into tennis again and is loving it.  Kristie has some tennis experience throughout high school, and before kids would find time to hit the ball around with Paul in San Francisco.   Lessons are already providing a great foundation for them both to join other friends for pickup games and mixed doubles.  Claire (15), and Jane (14) are scheduled for a few lessons and will probably enjoy the pool and fitness facilities as they stay conditioned for high school sports.   They are really looking forward to many action-packed hours at the club moving forward.

The Ling family lives in Hillsborough and is thrilled to join PTC.  They joined PTC in February 2022.   Both Tony and Nellie grew up on the East Coast, played tennis on their high school teams, and then took 25+ year hiatuses.  They met in Boston during business school and then moved to the Bay area for work and in search of warmer weather.  Tony and Nellie have three daughters.  Kayla (13) and Cassie (12) attend Nueva Middle School, and Enya (6) attends West Hillsborough Elementary.  Between the three girls, they play tennis, soccer, piano, electric bass and drums, which makes for a busy and loud household.  Nellie and Tony have rekindled their love for tennis at PTC and look forward to getting to know the PTC community.

Kristen Freethy (Murphy) and her husband Bo Murphy joined PTC in February 2022.  Kristen grew up playing tennis at the club and played varsity tennis at Burlingame High School. She is the daughter of PTC members Barbara and Terry Freethy.  Bo, who grew up in Cleveland, also played tennis in high school and played college intramural tennis.  He is looking forward to playing more tennis now that they have joined PTC.  They have a daughter, Emarie (6) who is just getting into tennis camps and lessons.  Kristen has wonderful memories of spending time at the club when she was growing up and she is looking forward to recreating the same wonderful experiences with her family.

Resignations (since January 2022):

Clean up your strokes and organize your game this season.  There are many opportunities to join clinics or take private lessons with myself and Coach Stephanie and we are really looking forward to having you on court.  We are having a lot of fun with the Junior Events.  We have created the Evolution World Tour, an exciting series of Tournaments that emulates the Pro's Tour, where kids learn to compete while we reinforce the core values of our program: Respect - Explore - Train - Compete.  So far in 2022 we have played Beijing and Rome, and the next stop in our calendar is Paris closing the clay season.

For those families who are making summer plans, it's time to register for Summer Camps.  We are offering four different camps this year, based on age group and level.  Court Kidz and Court Warrior for players 12 & under, and Junior Development and Evolution Tournament camps for players 13+.  You can check the details and register in our new website www.evolutionburlingame.com and don't hesitate in contact me if you have any questions.

SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITIES: We are in the process of recruiting and hiring the summer season staff.  There are on court and off court positions available, and we are currently looking for College and High-School students, PE Teachers and Personal Trainers to cover the following positions: Assistant Tennis Coach - Camp Counselor - Physical Trainer.  This is a good opportunity to develop your leadership skills in a great work environment. Apply here: https://form.jotform.com/220746314666054

HOUSING NEEDED: Every year we hire outstanding college players to work as assistant coaches during the summer.  Johanna Palacio (Argentina) and Javiera Gamonal (Chile) who are studying in Tennessee will be joining us again this summer.  Francisco Aran Martin (Argentina) who is studying in North Carolina will also be joining our team this season.

It will be greatly appreciated if you could help us to find housing for them.  If you have a spare room at your house or if you know someone who is willing to rent a space, please let me know.
