President’s Message:  Kate Belding
Happy Summer!  The weather has been lovely, and it has been wonderful to be able to get back to our normal tennis and social events.  Thank you to all the volunteers who put on a great van Dillen Men’s Doubles Championship, led by Tennis Chair Reynold Harbin and Tournament Chair, Peter Stevenson.  Thank you to Nancy Batchelor for manning the tournament desk and preparing the food for players and for the gallery of spectators during the finals on Sunday.  It was a terrific event and I know we were all very excited to be able to gather, watch some great tennis, and socialize.  Many thanks to Denee Berliner and her social committee for organizing a terrific van Dillen party.  The paella and Greek salad were delicious, while the beverages were flowing as we all celebrated being together again at a club event.  The Twilight Tennis and BBQ in June was also a wonderful event.  Thank you to the Men’s and Women’s 3.0 teams who hosted the party with a fun “Summer of Love” theme.  It was great to see so many members at these events, including many of our new members!

We look forward to our next event, the Summer Swing Mixed Doubles event on July 17th.  Please watch for sign-up information for this round robin mixed doubles tournament.

Our fitness room renovation project is well under way.  Many thanks to Gene Trainor and his committee for heading up this project.  He has overseen it from the beginning planning stages right through the construction of the new facility.  It will be a fantastic addition to the club.

Finally, mark your calendars for July 20th, for our quarterly membership meeting.  This will be our first in person membership meeting since January 2020.  Please come to hear about all that is happening at PTC.

Manager:  Lona Means

Reminders:
  • Juniors under the age of 18 are not permitted on PTC premises after 5:00 pm without an adult present.  Juniors between the ages of 18 and 24 are not permitted on the premises after 9:00 pm unless supervised by an adult member.  Club keys are intended for Senior club members only.  Please do not give your children access to club keys.  The PTC Board of Directors takes these types of violations very seriously and any violation of this policy could result in suspension of your membership.  Children under the age of 14 require adult supervision at all times.  The club is monitored by security cameras and security walkthroughs.
  • Court reservations are limited to 1.5 hours for doubles, 1 hour for singles.  Also, three players are considered singles, please change your reservation time if you have three players show up to play rather than four.
  • The towels are back, however, they are also disappearing at an alarming rate.  Please leave the towels in the towel bins prior to leaving the club.
  • When entering or exiting the club through the Chatham gate, walk through the club house or stop and wait until a break in play on court #1.
  • Close all umbrellas, pick up trash, close doors, and turn off lights prior to leaving the club.

Tennis News:  Reynold Harbin
We hope you have been able to enjoy some of the recent tennis events at the PTC.  We kicked off our 2021 tennis activities in May with a fun ‘Ladies of the 80s’ Doubles Social, with 46 ladies coming out in their neon and leg warmers for some fun tennis.

That was followed by the 2021 van Dillen Men’s Doubles Championship.  It featured 74 players battling for the championship, as well as a wonderful cocktail party on Saturday night.

Mark Lewis and Keith Taylor teamed up to win the title in the 3.5 division, with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 win in the finals against Don Clark and David Hyman.

The 4.0 division featured Bob Jasmer and David Marcus taking the title with a close final against Andrew Ogilvie and Christian Reilly, with a match score of 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).

The Senior Division featured a final round match with Ken March and Jeff Tateosian prevailing with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Glenn Mendelson and Maris Laipenieks.

The Open Division champions for 2021 are David Crawford and Mike Ying, with a 7-5, 6-4 finals match win against Dan Mulready and Gary Goodman.

Congratulations to all on a great tournament and fantastic turnout.

Our next major event is the Summer Swing (replaces our Spring Fling), which will be held on Saturday, July 17th, starting at 1:00 pm.  Our theme this year is ‘A Taste of Napa Valley,’ and this is a team event.  Sign up individually at the club (the sign-up sheet is on the board), or email Lona/Steve to sign up.  You will be placed on a team of 6 and will play 3 rounds of mixed doubles.  There will be two flights, and the top team in each flight will play in a final round for a prize.

Tennis play is from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm or so, and a fun party from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  Note that there is a maximum number of players, so the first 24 men and 24 women are in.  Cost is $25 per player, or $20 for non-participants who can join just for the party.

See you on the courts!

Treasurer's Report:  Gene Trainor
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Membership meeting.  A summary of our operations and financial results (balance sheet, income statement and cash flows) will be presented at the meeting.  While we have had some unplanned maintenance costs, we continue to be in great shape financially.

Fitness Room Update:  Gene Trainor
Construction efforts are underway!  We have completed the demolition phase of the project.  Over the next few weeks, the contractor will be completing the framing and rough-in work, primarily with plumbing and electric.  During the demolition phase, the contractor noticed that there was a section of the concrete floor that was raised in the middle of the new fitness room.  As a result, this area is being jackhammered out so that the floor is consistent across the entire room.  We are still targeting a mid-August opening although timing of window installation and junior room flooring could push this to the end of August.  As we build out this renovated space based on our approved plans, I would like to give a special shout-out of thanks to Adrienne Schubiner and Stuart Batchelor for their advice and suggestions with design concepts for the space over the past year.  Many of these ideas were incorporated into the final plans.  We are very fortunate to have so many people offer their time and talents towards this effort - it would have been impossible to get to this point without all of you.

Social News:  Denee Berliner
The Social Committee is in full swing and happy to be gathering once again.

The van Dillen Doubles Championship weekend saw one of the most participated events ever, with over 115 players and guests attending.   The Saturday van Dillen Cocktail Party featured a Spanish theme with Paella chef Richard Poncini a big hit for dinner, as was the wine bar staffed by our very own Jen Ellison and Chris McMurdo.  Andrea Moore and Olive Ebert were the bakers of the yummy desserts, the gorgeous sunflower arrangements were created by Val March and Marissa Hauselt, registration was led by Audrey Tse, and the music by house DJ, Jeff Tateosian.  The set-up and event staff, led by Lona, included Steve, Tony and Loel.  On behalf of the entire club, THANK YOU to all who worked this event for the great job and attention to detail.

The first Twilight Tennis & BBQ in almost two years was held last month.  The event, led by Andrea Moore and the 3.0 women and men’s teams, was fantastic!  We had 130 attendees, one of the most ever to participate in a Twilight event.  The 60’s theme was a huge hit, as evidenced by the various psychedelic outfits, head bands and music from the Summer of Love.  The weather was perfect, the tennis was non-stop, and the food (hippy chicken) & signature cocktail was delicious.  It was a true testament that the PTC members are back and want to be together, adults and kids alike.

Special thanks also goes to Lona and her crew, the BBQ crew, old rocker Jeff Tateosian who provided the Summer of Love music, and everyone else who helped make this another amazing event.

Our next Soirée is the Summer Swing…A Taste of The Napa Valley, and is scheduled for Saturday, July 17th from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm.  Please don’t miss the charcuterie table, wines from the Napa Valley, our signature cocktail (the Napa Valley Fizz), and the prizes.  The party is included in the entry fee for all players, and $20 per person for all non-players.  In keeping with the theme please wear all white.  We hope to see you!

Cheers from the Social Committee!

Summer Camps are in full Swing!  Summer is here and with it a great opportunity to share our passion for Tennis with many kids.  It's nice to see these bright neon T-Shirts at PTC and the High School Courts.
While we emphasize our focus on behaviors as Respect, Teamwork and Sportsmanship, we set challenges to each player with the goal of making them Think and Explore, pushing their limits, and keeping them motivated on and off the court.
We are receiving between 30-40 kids every week, and everything has been flowing pretty smoothly since week 1 thanks to the great team we have this season: Lead Coaches: Pablo Alvarado & Stephanie Luk - Assistant Coaches: Johanna Palacio (Argentina) and Javiera Ortiz (Chile) who are playing college tennis in Tennessee, Lead Counselor: Talia Cresci who is heading to Boston for her second year of college, and a great group of Junior Assistants: Annika Ganguly, Mason Salma, Lindsay Brooks, Lexi Podkaminer, Ryan Schaefer, Lily Grenier, Grayson Dougherty and Vedika Bhaumik, most of them members of PTC and players from our program.
Between our three camps - Court Kidz, Court Warrior & Junior Development - we offer playing opportunities for players 5-16 years old of all levels every week of Summer.  We are on court until mid August and we are looking to having members of your family join us.  You can check each program at www.coachpabloalvarado.com and if you have any questions, don't hesitate in contact me at (669) 236-1277.
Happy Summer!!
