President’s Message: Kate Belding Happy Spring! We think of spring as a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. This year more than ever we look forward to a springtime of new beginnings and fresh hope for our lives to return to more normal times.
We are cautiously moving forward with our planning for tennis and social events for 2021. The Mixed Doubles Round Robin began in March. We have some great events coming up, including our Family Doubles Round Robin April 19-May 7 and the Friday Women’s Doubles Tournament on May 7th. Make sure to sign up for our upcoming fun-filled events.
Please take a look at the tennis and social committee reports for all the information about future events. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that I’m really excited for us to hold our tennis and social events as we put the past year of lockdown, shelter in place, and restricted activities in our rear-view mirror.
Of course, even as we ramp up and gather for social and tennis events, please remember to wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing. We are so close to the end of this, please remain vigilant and help us get down the home stretch.
I’d like to extend a formal welcome to our new Board Members: Jack Herndon, Denee Berliner, and Kris Willig. We are looking forward to a great year. Thank you to our outgoing Board Members, Dave Bressie, Jackie Sage, and Brian Desler.
I’m also happy to report that we will be moving forward with our fitness room renovation project. Please read Gene Trainor's report for all the details. It will be great to have a beautiful, updated fitness room at the Club! Editor's Note: Jeff Tateosian On Wednesday, I noticed the clubhouse had a sprinkling of veteran members milling around inside. It was the first week in 13 months that the doors had been unlocked. I enjoyed conversing with Steve Brooks, Rob Delantoni, Dennis Huajardo, and Daisy Kwan for the first time in ages. Together the four of them represent 122 years of membership.
The opening of the clubhouse and expanded capacity with the pool, hot tub and exercise room represent the club's slow safe path to normalcy. Just one look at the Upcoming Events at the top of the newsletter, and it's easy to start to get excited about tennis again. I appreciate Reynold Harbin and his tennis committee for scheduling more tournaments and tennis activities than I've ever seen at PTC.
Let's continue to play safe, respect other members, and get your vaccines. We'll soon see "those good old days" at PTC again soon. Manager: Lona Means One step closer...to normal……
Please list all players and swimmers on your Skedda reservations. If for some reason you can't make your reservation, please cancel as soon as possible. Also, if you are more than 15 minutes late, you will lose your reservation. The courts and pool are more popular than ever, and your fellow members appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Due to the windy conditions, we have lost several umbrellas, please close all umbrellas before you leave, close doors and turn off lights.
Guests must sign the waiver form at the front desk podium. Also please make sure to sign in your guest at the same time.
The lost and found closet is once again full to the brim, please check the closet for any lost items. Items left after April 15th will be donated to charity. Our next event (April 17th) is the PTC Family + Pro Tennis event, which is an afternoon of tennis games for your family with our club pros - Coach Pablo and Coach Stephanie.
We will be using the back courts where each PTC family can sign up and play together, moving from court 4 to 7, spending about 10 to 12 minutes on each court with the following format:
* Players check in at your designated time at the Front Desk (next to the BBQ area).
* Station 1: Warm up activities on court 4.
* Station 2: Drill with Pro on Court 5.
* Station 3: Ball Machine - Hitting to targets on court 6.
* Station 4: Games with Pro on Court 7.
Prizes will be awarded to game winners and hitting various targets on court 6 :)

See you on the courts! Fitness Room Update: Gene Trainor Renovation Plans - A huge thank you to the 118 members who voted on the proposed plans to renovate the fitness room, relocate the Junior Room and create a unisex bathroom for our youth. The final voting results were 105 members in favor and 13 against. This is our club, and it is critical that we hear from and respond to as many members as possible.
As you read this update, the construction drawings have been submitted to the City of Burlingame for permit. While we do not know the timeframe for approval from the city, the construction team, led by Steve Meyers Construction (clubhouse bar and men’s locker room) is ready to go. You may see some initial very light demo in the soffit area of the boy’s locker room and junior room as the contractor assesses the current HVAC situation. Deposits have been made on all of the equipment and the rubber floor in the fitness room. We look forward to a Summer opening of these renovated facilities.
Aside from member support, this project would not be possible without the support of the following people: Mark Pearcy, who created the initial renderings to give us an idea of what was feasible and not feasible. This support at the earliest stages was critical and super helpful - thank you Mark. I'm appreciative of an amazing fitness room committee who contributed their ideas, pushed back on things not deemed critical to a great tennis club fitness room and made a visit to another Bay Area club to evaluate the selected equipment in person. Thank you Joe Feeney, Linda Pene Nagare, Cindy Sibley, Lexi Slavet, Jim Sobel, and Steve Williams. A special shout out of thanks to Jim and Joe for attending so many meetings at the club to work out the details. Thanks to Pablo for contributing his ideas on key elements of what a fitness room geared toward tennis players should include - thanks Pablo. Finally, many thanks to Lona and our 2020 and 2021 Board of Directors, who really engaged in the details, posed great questions and worked to ensure we created plans that make sense for PTC for many years in the future.
Lastly, if you have children who have used the Junior Room in the past or who would like to use the room in the future, we would like to hear from you. We are forming a small committee to assess what our youth would like to see in this room to make it attractive to enjoy on a regular basis. Lexi Slavet will be helping to collect input. If you would like to contribute your ideas for the Junior Room - please email Lexi at lexislavet@gmail.com. She will be in touch in the coming month with all members or families who would like to give input. Your opinion matters as we consider function, relaxation and fun! Thank you. Membership News: Erica Reilly
Please help me welcome our three newest members:
Steven and Sarah Oliver
The Olivers joined PTC in January 2021. They have two children, Emma is 7 years old and Owen is 5. They both attend Washington Elementary School and are looking forward to tennis lessons. The family moved to Burlingame from Chicago in 2019 and Steven has been a regular player at Burlingame’s public courts. The family is looking forward to enjoying the courts, the pool and all the social events that make PTC such a special place.
John Garner and Sylvie Hendricks
John, Sylvie and their daughter Revell were excited to join the club in March. John played tennis briefly growing up and became obsessed during the pandemic. He plays doubles with PTC members Justin McMahan, Ekine Akuiyibo and Chad Partridge. Both Sylvie and Revell also love tennis, although they only started taking lessons over the past year. Sylvie says if you want to feel like Serena Williams in comparison, come play with her. They are a Washington Elementary School family. Revell is in fourth grade and John is very involved with the Dad’s club there. They love traveling and have flown around the world on miles…twice. Their philosophy is “frugal-lavish” - traveling on a budget in style.
Dale and Laura Elaine Chang
The Chang family also joined in March and live in the neighborhood by the club. Dale played at PTC during High School in the 90’s and is looking forward to getting back into tennis. Nolan (age 9) and Ansley (age 7) are beginners, and the family can’t wait to enjoy all PTC has to offer. Social News: Denee Berlinger I’m excited to be working with the new 2021 PTC Board. This year, unlike last, we should have more opportunities to gather as folks receive their vaccines. The first social committee event on the calendar is in June with the van Dillen Doubles Championship as well as twilight tennis. Later in the summer on July 17th is SUMMER SWING, replacing the Spring Fling. We are looking for additional volunteers to help on the committee and welcome any and all who are interested and available. Please reach out - we’d love to have you join the team! Tennis Pro: Pablo Alvarado
See you on the courts!
PTC summer camp information will be available on April 15th. The summer session will run from June 21st to August 13th. Please check your email for the latest information on sign-ups.
